Just Transitions – from promise to practice. Integrating decent work in emerging circular supply chains and green manufacturing

The Foundry Social Justice and Human Rights Centre Limited 17 Oval Way London SE11 5RR

About this Event

Just transition is rapidly rising-up the agenda of both policymakers and business leaders.  The agreement to establish a just transition mechanism was one of the key achievements of COP30.  In 2026 it’s no longer a discussion about what and why, the key question is how: how do we implement just transitions across sectors, supply chains and workplaces?

Too often, environmental and human rights agendas are run on separate tracks. Businesses, investors and funders pursuing green goals, in circular supply chains and clean manufacturing, risk overlooking workers’ rights until something goes wrong. However, decent work isn’t a footnote to just transition, it’s at its centre.

This session will draw on recent work led by ETI under the UK Government funded SMEP Programme. ETI has been supporting companies and organisations to integrate decent work into circular supply chains and green manufacturing initiatives across Africa and South Asia, in sectors including plastics, leather, textiles and organic waste.

ETI will present findings from three recently published papers that synthesise lessons learnt from supporting decent work in MSMEs, for workers in informal employment, and in emerging circular supply chains and green manufacturing. The session will highlight practical case studies demonstrating how organisations can take concrete first steps to operationalise just transitions in their supply chains and workplaces.

Please join us for an in-person roundtable event to:

  • Share and review lessons on what works, and what doesn’t, in integrating decent work into environmental programmes working with the private sector.
  • Discuss how to incentivise and support environmental initiatives to embed decent work outcomes from design, through implementation, to evaluation and beyond.

If you are a funder, investor, business, partner organisation or researcher supporting circular supply chains and green manufacturing, please get in touch to participate in this roundtable.  Please email: info@eti.org.uk

Ethical Trading Initiative

The Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) is the leading alliance of businesses, NGOs and trade unions working together to advance human rights in global supply chains through collective action, advocacy and accountability. We provide a trusted, practical space for collaboration to strengthen working conditions, address human rights abuses and support resilient, responsible business practices. Climate change is no longer just an environmental issue, it’s a human rights issue. From extreme weather to disrupted livelihoods, its impacts are already affecting workers and communities in global supply chains, especially in lower-income countries and high-risk sectors, making just transitions central to of ETI's 2030 strategy and work.
