Disruption on the horizon: consent, capital and clean-up in the oil and gas sector
The Inner Temple, Crown Office Row, London EC4Y 7HL - Entrance via Tudor Street
About this Event
Join ClientEarth, Carbon Tracker and a panel of experts for breakfast and an energising morning discussion during London Climate Action Week.
Time: 8am – 10:30am (8am: Breakfast | 8:45am: Panel | 9:45am: Networking)
From the Strait of Hormuz to the North Sea, oil and gas markets are shaped by chokepoints. Some are physical; others are legal, regulatory and financial. Amid shifting market dynamics, this event will explore the complex and changing path through which oil and gas projects are approved, financed, and retired in the UK.
Experts from law, academia, finance, policy research and civil society will explore these ‘chokepoints’ in the context of escalating climate impacts, tightening rules for project approval and asset retirement, and policy tension as the Government balances energy security with its commitment to end new licensing in the declining North Sea basin.
Confirmed speakers:
- Sarah Hill-Smith, Lawyer at ClientEarth
- Nadia Ameli, Professor of Climate Finance and Research Director, UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources
- Mark Campanale, CEO at Carbon Tracker
- Tessa Khan, Executive Director at Uplift
- Sophie Marjanac, Director of Legal at Redwater Insights
ClientEarth, Carbon Tracker and UCL will launch a pivotal new report, testing whether fossil reserves valuations keep pace with this shifting landscape, or leave investors blind to material financial risks.
The event will explore whether current rules across the fossil fuel lifecycle are fit for purpose, or whether, for oil and gas companies, disruption is on the horizon.

ClientEarth and Carbon Tracker
ClientEarth is a non-profit organisation that uses the law to create systemic change that protects the Earth for – and with – its inhabitants. We are tackling climate change, protecting nature and stopping pollution, with partners and citizens around the globe. We hold industry and governments to account and defend everyone’s right to a healthy world. ClientEarth teams in Europe, Asia and the USA work to shape, implement and enforce the law, to build a future for our planet in which people and nature can thrive together.
Carbon Tracker is an independent financial think tank working to align capital markets with an accelerated energy transition. Through data-driven research, we assess the risks associated with continued fossil fuel investment and opportunities arising from changes in energy demand, technology and climate policy. Our work empowers investors, policymakers, and companies to make informed decisions that support an orderly shift to a net zero emissions future.
